As an English teacher in a children's English school, one often encounters one of the following problems with course beeks: Either the material is not challenging enough or too complex for the students.
In the first case, we find the same amount of new vocabulary and a particular grammar pattern set out in a monotonous manner - unit for unit. In this way the students and the teacher might have an easy time memorizing or presenting the target language. Can the students, however, really experience the fact that learning a language means more than empty words and phrases?
A similar problem occurs with books which are packed with language which is too difficulty for children to understand: they feel frustrated and lose confidence in their abilities, stop paying attention in class and feel bored.
It is not an easy task to find the right balance here, but the authors of the STEP UP- series have certainly succeeded in doing so. The amount of input is manageable, yet the students' creativity is challenged in varied tasks and meaningful texts. The situational context reflexts real life and so leads the students smoothly towards free conversation and language use. The units are set out in a clear manner without an overpowering amount of language while the illustrations clarify and add colour to language learning yet are not distracting in any way.
What more can you hope for? Ah yes, the teachers: they have got it good, too. There is plenty of additional material to make lesson planning efficient and easy. And what refreshing and rewarding experience for a teacher to see his students actually enjoy the learning prosess!
